June 29, 2000: Sell Atlanta to the Highest Bidder?

June 30, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

I noticed that Robb Pitts, president of the Atlanta City Council and a mayoral candidate, is proposing to sell naming rights to Hartsfield International Airport, much as the free-loading professional sports teams have done.  Mr. Pitts says he was inspired by the fact that Philips Electronics is paying $20 million a year for 20 years to have its name on the arena in Atlanta that … [Read more...] about June 29, 2000: Sell Atlanta to the Highest Bidder?

June 22, 2000: A Public Affairs Pop Quiz

June 25, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

A little public affairs pop quiz, readers.  What are the duties of the Georgia secretary of state?  The labor commissioner?  What about the insurance commissioner?  Who is the commissioner of agriculture?  Who heads up the corrections department?  The revenue department? Chances are that most of us don’t have a clue who these people are or what they do.  Yet, some – attorney … [Read more...] about June 22, 2000: A Public Affairs Pop Quiz

June 15, 2000: Southern Baptists Take a Hardline Approach

June 19, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

In case you missed it, the Southern Baptists are holding their annual confab this month in Orlando – home of the godless Walt Disney World – to affirm that women aren’t fit to be ministers.  It seems that through some kind of loophole, a hundred or so women got to be Baptist preachers and while I have been unable to uncover any evidence that any or all of them did a poor job, … [Read more...] about June 15, 2000: Southern Baptists Take a Hardline Approach

June 8, 2000: A Letter to Our Governor

June 10, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Honorable Roy Barnes State Capitol Atlanta, Georgia Dear Governor: As you know, I am one of your biggest fans.  I think you have done an outstanding job as governor and I have said so in my columns and in speeches around the state.  But today I am not a happy camper. You are being lobbied shamelessly by Colin Campbell, a columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to … [Read more...] about June 8, 2000: A Letter to Our Governor

June 1, 2000: My Idea for a New Law — Make Parents Responsible for Their Kids

June 5, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

The last thing we need in this state are more laws but I’ve got an idea for one I think might be worth the time and attention of our legislators.  They aren’t going to have much to do next year other than deal with a small matter of whether or not to change the state flag.  That shouldn’t take long.  They have already gotten the big issue out of the way with the Bremen High … [Read more...] about June 1, 2000: My Idea for a New Law — Make Parents Responsible for Their Kids

Dicktations: Here’s What I’m Thinking

State Sen.Steve Gooch, R-Dahlonega, has announced he is running for lieutenant governor.  Gooch is the guy who said that approving permits to strip-mine the Okefenokee for titanium dioxide to manufacture, among other things, toothpaste whitener is not a legislative matter.  It is up to the bureaucrats to decide. This, despite overwhelming opposition from Georgians across the state.  File that away and remember it when it comes time to vote.  I know I will. … [Read More...] about A long memory

Yarbrough received over 1,000 email responses last year – both positive and negative. Though most of the emails he receives support his viewpoints, one thing is for sure: Dick Yarbrough’s column speaks to people and they respond. Here is a sampling of email responses Yarbrough has received in the past:

  • Thanks for writing what we all are thinking.
  • I am annoyed by anybody who presumes to know what Georgians think.  And that, sir, includes you.
