November 23, 2000: A Day to Count My Blessings

November 23, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Why set aside a single day to be thankful? If any people on earth should be constantly focused on our blessings, we are the ones.  Therefore, by the power vested in me, I declare this Thanksgiving Year.  I hope retail merchants don’t take this as an excuse for a year-round Christmas selling season.  Who wants to see Chia pets and electric foot massagers in July?  But take all … [Read more...] about November 23, 2000: A Day to Count My Blessings

November 16, 2000: That Was History’s Goofiest Election Ever

November 16, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

With one of history’s goofiest elections behind us – I hope – let us sort through the events of the past few weeks and see what sense we can make of it all. EVERYBODY TAKE A DEEP BREATH.  This is not the first close presidential election, folks.  In 1880, James Garfield defeated Winfield Hancock by .02 percent, or to be more specific, 48.27% to 48.25%.  Four years later, … [Read more...] about November 16, 2000: That Was History’s Goofiest Election Ever

November 9, 2000: Flash! We Have a Bulletin! Democracy is Alive and Well

November 9, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

I have never been more proud to be an American citizen than I am today.  We proved the pundits – including yours truly – wrong.  We are not apathetic.  We do care.  All over the country, we went out in record numbers to vote for those we want to lead us into the new millennium.  I didn’t see a tank, a gun-toting soldier or mobs with sticks and stones impeding anyone’s right to … [Read more...] about November 9, 2000: Flash! November 2, 2000: If You Don’t Vote, You Can’t Whine

November 2, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

The punishment which the wise suffer who refuse to take part in the government is to live under the government of worse men.”  Plato - 500 BC (or thereabouts) “Any able-bodied person who doesn’t vote should be keel-hauled, dipped in boiling oil and forced to answer the mail generated by my column on Arab terrorists.”  Yarbrough – 2000 AD. Power to the people!  Once again, we … [Read more...] about November 2, 2000: If You Don’t Vote, You Can’t Whine

October 26, 2000: Open Letter to Governor Roy Barnes

October 26, 2000 by webmaster Leave a Comment

Governor Roy Barnes State Capitol Atlanta, Georgia Dear Governor: It has been quite awhile since I have written.  You will recall that a few months back, I asked you to resist Atlanta Journal columnist Colin Campbell lobbying you to store Olympic first aid forms at my beloved alma mater, the University of Georgia.  I check periodically to be sure that junk hasn’t slipped in … [Read more...] about October 26, 2000: Open Letter to Governor Roy Barnes

Dicktations: Here’s What I’m Thinking

State Sen.Steve Gooch, R-Dahlonega, has announced he is running for lieutenant governor.  Gooch is the guy who said that approving permits to strip-mine the Okefenokee for titanium dioxide to manufacture, among other things, toothpaste whitener is not a legislative matter.  It is up to the bureaucrats to decide. This, despite overwhelming opposition from Georgians across the state.  File that away and remember it when it comes time to vote.  I know I will. … [Read More...] about A long memory

Yarbrough received over 1,000 email responses last year – both positive and negative. Though most of the emails he receives support his viewpoints, one thing is for sure: Dick Yarbrough’s column speaks to people and they respond. Here is a sampling of email responses Yarbrough has received in the past:

  • Thanks for writing what we all are thinking.
  • I am annoyed by anybody who presumes to know what Georgians think.  And that, sir, includes you.
